Performers: AH HUH, J’nique Nicole, Laya, Maya Hatch, Nayokenza, SARASA, Timid
Ranging from the bombast of SARASA’s towering beats, the sleekness of Maya Hatch’s Jazz, the saccharine of J’Nique Nicole and Laya’s R’n’B, the depth of Nayokenza’s Dream Pop, and the empowerment of AH HUH and Timid’s Hip Hop. Through Harmonic Wavelength, BLM Tokyo seeks to pay homage to these musical traditions and their importance in Japan.
Countless protests and marches have taken place since May 5th 2020, when George Floyd lost his life to police violence in Minneapolis. Black Lives Matter has since exploded into action across the world, and Tokyo is no exception after 3,500 protesters marched through the streets of Shibuya.
But change does not happen overnight and as a representative of the black community and its interests in Japan, Black Lives Matter Tokyo continues to move forward despite the obstacles. While raising awareness of the challenges faced by black communities all over the world is key to the movement, BLM Tokyo’s sense of community building is just as strong, and with that in mind, Harmonic Wavelength has come into existence.
About Black Lives Matter Tokyo
Black Lives Matter Tokyo was created in response to and in support of the protests happening in the US and worldwide – a response to the murder of George Floyd. However, Floyd’s death is just one of many unjust instances black people have suffered at the hands of those sworn to protect them.
Our goal is to spread awareness on these issues, not just as problems faced by Americans but by examining the global scope of them. Furthermore, through our events we would like to show solidarity to those fighting for us back home—we’re listening, we’re with you, and we want the world to know and speak up.
